 Description Assignment 2 – Self-directed professional project
Due: Week 15
Length: 3,000 words
Weighting: 60%
Your task is to complete a professional project with a focus on middle schooling. The
nature of the task is to be negotiated with your tutor. It is expected that you will submit
a plan and a rationale for your project in Week 5 of the unit. The professional project
may take the form of:
• a survey of the literature on an aspect of middle schooling
• a plan for a research study on an aspect of middle schooling
• evaluation of a middle schooling innovation in a particular school or system
• discussion of a controversial issue in middle schooling
• an analysis of changing emphases in middle schooling principles
• an outline of a professional development program in the middle years of
schooling.
Marking criteria
Marking criteria will be negotiated with individual students but may include:
• clarity of the plan
• quality of the rationale
• ability to critique relevant literature
• ability to set out procedures and likely outcomes
• ability to critically analyse and reflect on findings
• academic writing skill, including referencing
• addressing objectives: 2, 5, 6, 7.
