 Description Written Research Assignment:

The media regularly report recent findings from Scientific Research often however these reports are inaccurate and sensationalised.

For example:
GM corn had a gene that "if transferred from corn snacks, for example, it could turn our intestinal flora into living pesticide factories".

You as future scientists need to be able to evaluate and discuss such issues from an educated and informed standpoint based on scientific fact, not emotional conjecture.

For your assignment you will need to choose one article from a newspaper or “popular science” magazine, find the original research article(s) on which the report was based and write a critical analysis of the issue.

Your report should be approx.1500 - 2000 words long and include a discussion of the following:

What was done – the scientific methods used?
What were the results of the study?
What did the actual study say and what was reported?
What are the benefits/dangers of the application of this technology?
What alternatives are there?
What ethical issues are associated with this research?
What are the public perceptions of this type of research?

Your assignment should be written as a report with clear sub-headings, using the above questions as a guide.

Assignments are to be submitted electronically via the course website and in hard copy to the designated assignment box on level 1, N34. You will receive instructions on this in due course
Note: Failure to submit by the deadline will result in penalties at the rate of 10% per day, unless documentary evidence of medical or other extenuating circumstances is provided via the School Office or Convenor within ONE WEEK of the deadline.

IMPORTANT:

(1) Make sure your name and student number are on your assignment.
Also place the name of the general area (see page 1) of your chosen topic on the cover sheet.

(2) Students must produce a unique assignment based on reference material

(3) All reference material must be acknowledged within the text of the assignment in a valid and consistent format (refer to lecture by Belinda Nicolson-Guest)

(4) A bibliography or reference list must be attached to the end of the assignment, in alphabetical order of first author name and in a valid and consistent format.

(5) Students must not download sections of information from the Internet and
“ cut and paste” it directly into the assignment. Such activities are viewed as plagiarism and are not acceptable at tertiary education institutions. If an assignment is found to be plagiarized the student will receive zero marks. Plagiarism is referred to the head of School and may result in exclusion.

(6) The total assignment should be approx. 2000 words long excluding legends to diagrams

(7) Diagrams are highly recommended if appropriate to the topic

Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in zero marks.
We(teacher) will be using text matching software via the SafeAssign system this year. You will be able to submit your assignment via Blackboard (the course web site) as a draft and check the degree of text matching. Instructions for this will follow in due course.

The Griffith University library provides an Information Sheet on “ How to Cite Internet Resources” (No. 85) which will assist you in this. OR Cancer risk can be reduced through changes in diet and lifestyle (American Cancer Society 1985) The references should be cited in full in the reference list at the end of the assignment in alphabetical order.
