Answer the three Hamlet questions, approximately 1.5 pages for each.
One of the inevitable and time-honored questions asked about Hamlet focuses on the question of his insanity, whether he has put on his "antic disposition" or whether he is truly mad. Consider some of the following questions, then write a short response of two to three pages double-spaced.
1. What is sanity or insanity?
2. How people know whether they are sane or insane?
3. If an individual lives entirely on his or her own, how can that person determine whether she or he is insane or sane?
4. Does one have to be insane to take another person's life? To commit murder?
5. Is Hamlet sane or insane during this act of the play?
Generations of critics have commented on Hamlet and his melancholy. Shakespeare likely knew of contemporary theories that tried to account for this condition and he refers to them, obliquely, in the play. Depression is the modern equivalent of melancholy, in most people's opinion. Briefly research the term "clinical depression" and decide the extent to which Hamlet suffers from depression. Again, cite your sources when responding to this question.
Examine paintings that are based on the play, Hamlet, and decide how successfully the artists portray the events and ideas contained within the play. Many of the most familiar paintings were produced in the nineteenth century, so looking at works by Delacroix, for example, may be a helpful place to start. Examine three paintings and include the images in your answer.
