Description "But what is government itself," Madison asked in Federalist: 51, "but the greatest of all reflections on human nature?" What did he mean by that question and how is the argument of the entire work-not just number-51-a commentary on the answer he presupposed? To what extent was madison laying down a principle that applies to all political conceptions? Using Madison as a point of departure, examine and contrast the conceptions of human nature that led the authors of the Federalist, Vonnegut, and at least two additional Federalist thinkers to different conclusions.
