Description
Please respond to one of the following questions in a well-thought-out essay of approximately 4-5 pages –word-processed, double-spaced, 12 point type, 1” margins.
Your essay should demonstrate your complete reading and understanding of Steinbeck’s THE GRAPES OF WRATH and your understanding of related course materials. It should be a thoughtful, analytical, interpretive essay which addresses the question specifically - not an uncritical synopsis of the book.
Passages excerpted from the book must be cited appropriately. You need not use other sources, but if you do, they, too, must be cited appropriately.
1. In the introduction to THE GRAPES OF WRATH, Robert DeMott states that “few American novels have attracted such passionate attacks and equally passionate defenses.” Describe the novel’s public and critical reception, considering the historical context in which Steinbeck wrote. Discuss what elements you think caused it to be highly praised. What elements do you think caused it to be banned in some communities?
2. Some literary criticism maintains THE GRAPES OF WRATH is an allegory, a story where characters, setting, and events have both a literal and symbolic meaning. Explore what the Joads’ journey along Route 66 might symbolize. Discuss what different characters like Tom Joad, Ma, Jim Casy, Rose of Sharon, or Granma and Granpa might symbolize.
3. In the introduction to THE GRAPES OF WRATH, Robert DeMott states that THE GRAPES OF WRATH is an engaged novel with a partisan posture, many complex voices, and passionate prose styles.” Examine the “interchapters” to find passages which seem to reflect some of Steinbeck’s philosophies. Compare these passages with the characters’ dialogue to determine the extent to which Steinbeck’s perspective is similar or different.
4. Steinbeck’s THE GRAPES OF WRATH, containing the hardships and the struggles of the Joads, inspired other artists in their creations. In the world of music, balladeer Woody Guthrie wrote “The Ballad of Tom Joad.” The lead song on a Bruce Springsteen album by the same name is “The Ghost of Tom Joad.” Find the lyrics to these two songs (see External Links for this course on Blackboard) and compare them to the Tom Joad in THE GRAPES OF WRATH. Compare the two songs and their portrayal of Tom Joad to each other.
