Other comments: The purpose of this study is to examine the nature, role and function of Shadow Education in British international schools in Hong Kong. The schools in the study are from those within the English Schools Foundation group. The approach adopted will be a qualitative method using questionnaires to understand the motives of students and parents from various cultural backgrounds perception of the need for private tutoring. Both the parents and students will be questioned to the extent, subjects and reasons for choosing (or being forced to undertake) private supplementary tutoring. The case study will centre upon two British international schools in Hong Kong, one primary and the other a secondary school. This area has a well documented history of high levels of private supplementary tutoring as highlighted by Bray (2005), Ireson (2004)and Kwock (2004). The study will compare results within schools of the English Schools Foundation (ESF) from both a primary and a secondary school.
