Description pick one subculture group, This group should have a collective identity based on their practices and use of texts that is distinguished from the 'mainstream': a guideline might be that membership of the subculture is important to the individual's identity rather than simply a hobby.

Methodology should be based on ethnography - use at least one of the following approaches. A key to the choice you make (and whether you choose one or more than one) is that sufficient data should be gathered.

1. One session with a number of hours of participant-observation of the group as they engage with the subculture: notes should be taken directly afterwards
2. One interview (recording or notes may be used)
3. Auto-ethnography (using notes based on experience and memory) may be used if the student has been a member of the subculture

The written work of 3000 words (+/-10%) should include:

a. Literature review: outline the relevant theories: there should be some independent research. Media references to the subculture can also be included at this point.

b. A short description of the methodology you employed and, based on this, a characterisation of the texts and practices of the subculture. Use specific examples/quotes yielded by your research.

c. A critical contextualisation of the subculture based on your literature review. This should form at least half the word-count.

d. Relevant documentation can be included in an appendix.

Formatting guidelines can be found in the BCFE student handbook. Names rather than number should be included on the cover-sheets.

Grading Criteria

1 : Your work is innovative and built around a strong unifying argument. You have taken the central question and used it as an opportunity to demonstrate a grasp of the subtleties of the various issues. Illustration and criticism is original and relevant. The balance of content is even and indicates selective skills that balance scope and depth, within the designated word count. Research from a range of sources has been smoothly integrated.

2.1/2.2: You have analysed, selected and integrated the various elements of our work to date. Terminology is correctly applied. There are a range of relevant examples. Your critical skills include and build on the criticisms covered in class. There is evidence of independent research. At the lower end of the merit (2.2), there are fewer examples and criticisms.

3: You have a basic understanding of the main ideas but examples and criticisms are either few and far between or tend towards the derivative. There might be a small number of instances of incorrect use of terminology/concepts. There is limited independent research. There are a number of spelling and grammatical mistakes
