COURSEWORK:
You are required to do one piece of coursework as part of your final assessment for this module. This should be an essay of not more than 1,500 words on the topic below.
Select a destination (one which you know well): preferably NOT a whole nation, but a region, town or resort. You may NOT choose Nottingham or Nottinghamshire.
Select a medium (choose from: movies, television, print media) and confine your remarks as far as possible to ONE medium.
Show how the destination’s image has been created and/or manipulated within this selected medium.
Please provide an in-depth analysis of the presentation of the destination as far as possible through ONE medium only, because we want to see depth of analysis rather than broad coverage. You will need to embark on the coursework early in the semester in order to gather as much relevant material as possible. You may confine your analysis to ONE movie or TV programme if you wish but must provide plenty of corroborative detail. Print media examples (for instance, weekend newspaper travel supplements, brochures, travel guides etc.) will be relatively easy to collect but the text analysis will be correspondingly intense.
This is intended to be a very personal piece of coursework in which you can develop your ideas about the relationships between the media and tourism (with culture mediating). Please look on it as an opportunity to express yourself as well as demonstrating your understanding of the issues.
Your word limit is 1,500. Try to observe the limit – use appendices for any additional material you want to include for illustration purposes. The references are not counted in the word limit.
