Description 1. On the basis of your reading, studying, and thinking on the trial of Socrates, write a clear and precise opinion paper in which you take a position on the question of whether or not Socrates should have been found guilty at his trial and then condemned to death. Give all the reasons you can think of as to (1) why Socrates should or should not have been found guilty at his trial, and then do the same as to (2) why he should or should not have been condemned to death and executed. On each of the two issues, take a position one way or the other; do not argue either issue both ways. Your essay must show that you have read the Euthyphro and the Apology very carefully and thoughtfully. Include appropriate quotations from the tests to support your main points. You are not required to do any background research on this issue, but you are free to do so if you wish. (An interesting book on this subject is The Trial of Socrates by I.F. Stone, which is available in both hardcover and paperback editions.)

2. Back up what you say with references to and quotations from the Euthyphro and the Apology (and from any other sources you may use). Include at least four relevant and substantial quotations from the Euthyphro and the Apology to illustrate your main points (two from the Euthyphro and two from the Apology). (A "substantial" quotation is at least 75 words long.)

3. For this paper, you must use the versions of the Euthyphro and the Apology that are contained in the current edition of our course anthology, Readings in Philosophy: Eastern & Western Sources.

6. Proofread your paper for typing and spelling mistakes; they will be counted as errors if left uncorrected.

7. Type your name and the title of this course in the upper right-hand or upper left-hand corner of the first page of your paper. Skip four spaces between this heading and the title of your paper.

8. Give your paper a short and appropriately descriptive title (e.g., "The Trial of Socrates as Portrayed in Plato's Euthyphro and Apology"). Do not prepare a separate title page. Center the title, underline or embolden it, and skip four spaces between the title and your first paragraph.

9. Write largely in your own words (i.e., don't quote too much) and according to the ordinary rules and principles of standard American English. Your paper should contain sufficient detail and be clearly, coherently, and correctly written (complete and properly structured sentences, appropriate word usage, correct spelling and punctuation, proper paragraphing, good overall organization, etc.). Note that you will lose credit for bad writing, plagiarism, and excessive quotations. (See Course Announcement 2.6 on "Paper Assignments and Plagiarism.")
10. All quotations from and paraphrases of sources must be accompanied by appropriate citations (i.e., accurate parenthetical references to the sources cited), and a list of works cited must be attached at the end of your paper. These citations and this list must be in proper form – i.e., in accordance with the current rules of the Modern Language Association (see J. Gibaldi, MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers [6th ed., 2003], or consult an appropriate online source such as t
