Description You have been provided with a published paper entitled “Determining produced water originating polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in North Sea waters; Comparison of sampling techniques” Toril I Utvik et al. Marine Pollution Bulletin. Vol. 38. No. 11. p 977-989.

Recent published findings have indicated a rise in the presence of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH’s) in the North Sea. Imagine that you are the Senior Separations Analyst responsible for all operations in your research laboratory. It has been decided that a more extensive investigation of the PAH’s be carried out immediately beside the 9 oil and gas fields and at the reference site, 10, as indicated in the paper p978.

Three laboratories, including yours, have been given the opportunity of obtaining a grant to do this. In an effort to convince the financing board that your laboratory should be the one awarded the grant you should provide a technical report which:

•provides a detailed summary of chromatographic technique that should be used
•describes the method of sampling and reasons why it has been chosen
•stipulates how many samples will be required and over how long a period
•states the approximate cost of the equipment, standards and running materials
•indicates the cost, skill and number of personnel required
•describes and critically evaluates the procedures you would follow to achieve the most accurate and precise data.
