Description
The Term Paper must be on a topic suggested by the student and approved by the instructor in which the student presents a well-reasoned, analytical debate of both sides of a current legal issue in constitutional criminal justice. Your topic should concern an issue that is presently before the courts or has been recently decided by a court, other than the exclusionary rule.
Your paper must include the following sections:
A factual description of the issue with a synopsis of how the issue pertains to current criminal justice events and why the issue is important to consider.
The present status of this issue before the courts and/or other law making bodies.
The presentation of both sides of the issue presenting a pro/con or for/against discussion.
A well reasoned analysis of the issues and presentation of your conclusions or proposals.
A discussion of how your proposals or conclusions would impact the criminal justice system.
Your term paper should have a cover page, an abstract, and a references page at the end. You should have at least 15 references beyond the course texts, with at least 6 of the 15 references being published decisions of state or federal courts. The cover page, abstract, and reference page should use APA formatting. In addition, all internal citations of outside sources should adhere to APA format. All text pages should be double-spaced and in 12-point font.
The length of the Term Paper should be between 14 and 23 pages, in addition to the title page, an abstract page, and reference page. Page length is not the basis of a favorable grade. If a paper is less than the minimum, however, a grade penalty may be imposed at the instructor's discretion.
