Description Captain Codd, a retired sailor, offers fishing trips during the summer season in his small boat based in Brinysea Harbour. He can take up to four people at a time, supplying the rods and bait. A family group of four (the Von Trapps) want a trip but ask him first whether he would give some basic tips on fishing as they have never done it before. Captain Codd agrees to this and prepares to set off. At the last minute a fifth member of the family, Arthur, rushes up and jumps into the boat, asking to be included.

Once Captain Codd has negotiated the boat out of the harbour he realises that Arthur appears to be intoxicated and says that he intends returning to shore to drop him off. The other family members assure the Captain that they will look after Arthur. Unfortunately during the course of the two-hour trip two rods are lost overboard, the Captain receives a nasty blow to the side of the head with an oar, and one family member’s spectacles are broken.

On return to the harbour, the Von Trapps demand their money back in recompense for the disastrous trip, plus compensation for the loss of the spectacles. Captain Codd draws their attention to a notice which is fixed to the door of the hut where he issues tickets and which disclaims liability for any losses incurred on the boat trips. In addition he threatens to sue the family for the lost rods and his injury.
