Description Students are asked to consider the way in which a specific space is structurally organised to promote consumption and how this space is used by potential consumers.

I WANT TO DO THIS ON A STRIP CLUB.

Further Guidance
The project encourages and tests students’ ability to engage effectively in research and presentation of a topic; to acquire knowledge of aspects of consumer culture and relate these to key concepts, theories and debates; to analyse and interpret textual, visual and to find, assimilate and organize information and ideas into a clear argument.

Your assignment should analyse the relationship between consumption and the lived environment. You are being asked to critically and analytically explore the role that sites of consumption play in the construction of consumerism as a way of life.

In your analysis you will need to make it clear how you have engaged with theoretical debates regarding the spatial and experiential dimensions of consumption processes and relationships.

Being 4000 words this is the largest piece of work that you have had to produce so far and will involve considerable research prior to writing. Time management and organization is the key to being successful. DO NOT leave this project until the last minute. The best projects come from those students who plan ahead, work outside the minimum reading requirement and actively engage with the material under consideration.

Suggested areas to look at include:
● Layout, theories of the type of space, local history of the site, access to the site (public and private transport), prices at the site, the consumer experience, the worker experience, issues of freedom and control.

● Issues of equality and inequality in the consumer environment. Does everyone have equal access to the experiences of consumption you are examining? Who is enfranchised and who is disenfranchised in the consumer experience?

● The way in which you yourself respond to and engage with the space you are analyzing. Do not be afraid to draw upon your own personal experiences.

● Processes of rationalization in the experiences and environments of consumption.

● The role and function of shop workers and their relationship to customers and / or the consumer environment.

● Modes of address within the consumer environment

● The construction of notions of community and / or individuality within the consumer environment

● The articulation of gender / ethnic / sexual / class identities within the consumer environment

● The function and semiotic significance of retail architecture and design

● Experiences of the local and the global in the context of late capitalism.

● Historical developments and change in the nature of consumer environments

● Processes of retail gentrification and urban re-development (i.e. West Quay)

● The branding and re-branding of spaces of consumption

n.b. The above list is not intended as a ‘recipe’. Nor is it definitive. In other words, you do not have to address all of these. Some of these areas will be more relevant than others – depending on the site that you choose to analyse. It is up to you to prioritise areas depending on which are the most relevant. If a specific angle is not interesting LEAVE IT OUT. Students will receive marks for showing the ability to SELECT appropriate materials.

I WAS THINKING PERHAPS ON THE FOLLOWING LINES FOR THE STRUCTURE OF THIS:
ALTHOUGH YOU DO NOT HAVE TO STICK TO THIS... AS LONG AS WHAT YOU DECIDE TO DO COVERS THE ABOVE CRITERIA I DO NOT MIND.
I. Introduction.
II. History and Background a. History of the site b. history of the strip club c. Location and Convenience of Access
III. Description of Consumer Experience a. Walkthrough of experience: b. Access to consumers – barrier/taboo/low access and visibility c. Pricing – demotivator/motivator d. How they are treated e. The stripper experience f. How they exit
IV. Analysis of Consumer Experience a. Layout of place impacts consumers b. Management decisions and worker decisions impact experience c.
V - CONCLUSION

n.b - I will also need to include parts to this essay. This will be specific to a strip club in my area that you will not have access to, unless you live on the south of England!.... this will not effect what you write though.

Structural requirements: Exposition Conducting research entails finding out as much as possible about an issue, finding good questions to ask, formulating one major research question, and then attempting to find answers to that question. These are key stages in this process: * Know the requirements, and set a realistic schedule. * Establish your topic. * Develop your research questions and thesis. * Do a preliminary search for source material available on your topic, and be sure to include books, scholarly articles, and internet sources. * Review this working bibliography, noting how relevant this material will be to your major research question. * Take copious notes on the material. To do so, you must be familiar with the three ways to incorporate research material into your work: Direct Quotes: use this tool only if the original source is relatively short, and is so eloquent that tampering with it will alter your aims. Use quotation marks for proper attribution, as well as the parenthetical in-text documentation. Ex: “Ernest Hemingway asserted that “All modern American literature begins with a book called The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain.” Paraphrase: use this strategy when the original information is lengthy, and you are reasonably certain that you can capture the essence of the content by placing the material in your own words. Of course, you may also paraphrase short blurbs, as you wish. You must show proper attribution for this idea by placing the source in parentheses at the close of the information. Ex: Many scholars in American literature agree with Hemingway’s claim that modern American fiction owes a debt to Mark Twain. Summary: you may summarize source material which is far too long to include in the text of your paper. This information should be abbreviated, and should not employ the specific diction, or syntax of the original. The summary is typically shorter than the paraphrase. Note: Please procure and read the relevant sections on preparation of the research paper in a modern mla (Modern Language Association), The Little, Brown Handbook, Part 9, 700--. * Revisit your notes, and retool your thesis sentence, taking care that it argues what you actually want to argue. * Write a first draft, in which you make your case, taking care to include all of the requisites segments of the research paper, including its structural elements, the in-text documentation, as well as the works cited page. * Move through several drafts of this paper, until you are reasonably certain that you have spoken to content, audience, and purpose.
