Description	The radius of the femoral head in total artificial hip joints is one of the most important design parameters. For a given material combination, say UHMWPE/steel, a given outside diameter of the acetabular cup of 50 mm, a radial clearance between the cup and the ball of 0.2 mm from current manufacturing technology and an average load of 2.5 kN 1. Determine an optimum femoral head radius in order to minimise the contact pressure within the UHMWPE cup. 2. Compare your calculation with the size of the femoral head currently used in total hip joint replacements and comment on any discrepancy. 3. In your own opinion, what is the optimum radius of the femoral head?
