Description Discuss and examine how the copyright industries have responded to the challenges of protecting their intellectual property in the digital age. Give particular reference to: legal strategies, educational strategies, public relations strategies, technological strategies, and the development of new business models.

This is an intellectual law module and so you must make the legal aspect of this question central. Accordingly, you should consider: What a copyright industry is, and how it relies upon the law of copyright to generate commercial 'value' from its works. How is this reliance on copyright law potentially undermined in the digital age? How is copyright being infringed in peer to peer file sharing of copyright material? What is the evidence for copyright being a compromised concept in the digital age and for this having direct negative commercial outcomes?

When dealing with the industries legal strategies, identify and analyse the relevant cases, ie: the Napster, Grokster cases etc. How have the copyright industries sought to bring legal action against copyright infringers at individual and network levels. Assess the outcomes, and in particular the legal uncertainties. What defences have the networks used (Sony Beta Max doctrine etc) and how effective have these been?

In addition, when examing new business strategies, consider how the legal download services respect copyright law - what licences and payments are in place to distinguish them from peer to peer illegal uploading and downloading of copyright material. use up to date stats please!
