Write a definitional argument in order to take a stand on a controversial issue. Definitional arguments set forth a controversial claim, challenge a definitional already in place, or examine whether something fits into an existing definition.
Example: Is cheerleading a sport? Why are Why Not?

• Includes a claim involving a question of definition
• Defines the key concept of the claim and evaluates the concept in terms of the definition
• Includes a consideration of counter-arguments
• Offers evidence for every part of the argument, including visuals, if appropriate
• Demonstrated understanding of definition arguments as they are presented in Chapter 8 of Everything’s an Argument.
• Thorough consideration of your audience and effective employment of strategies designed to persuade them
• Effective essay structure and college-level content and writing.
• Clear and precise sentence-level rhetoric (grammar and style)
Your paper should be 2-3 pages, typed, and double-spaced. Remember to use one-inch margins and 12 pt. Times New Roman. Also, title your essay, and be sure to place your name on your 1st page. You do not need a cover page.
