Description Palliative care nursing reflects a 'whole person' philosophy of care implemented across the lifespan and across diverse health settings, whereby the patient and the family is the unit of care. As the patients needs fluctuate on their disease pathway services have to remain flexible to address these changes during each persons journey.
The author currently works within a medical oncology unit whereby many patients return to the unit for symptom management related to disease progression, following initial assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation there is increasing evidence that 50% of patients admitted to the unit have been admitted for symptom management related to constipation. Of the patients admitted to the unit constipation is related to disease progression, treatment or general debility.
The author proposes to look at strategies needed to make patients and nurses aware of the importance of assessment and management of constipation. The assignment will review causes of constipation, management strategies within palliative care unit, quality of life issues related to constipation and current interventions.
